This week, our 7th graders are diving into the origins of algebra by learning about the brilliant mathematician al-Khwarizmi, often called the “father of algebra.” But why is it important to learn about the history of algebra rather than just memorizing equations?

Understanding the history of algebra helps students appreciate the roots of modern math and its global influences. Al-Khwarizmi’s contributions didn’t just give us new math tools—he opened up a way of thinking that empowers problem-solving and critical thinking. By exploring his work, students see how math evolved over time and how interconnected our world truly is.

Incorporating art into this lesson makes the experience even richer. When students combine math with creativity, they see the beauty of patterns, symmetry, and structure—deepening their appreciation and making learning more engaging. Learning math in this way builds not just skills but confidence and curiosity, encouraging students to explore more and think beyond the numbers.

Huzzah! Our 7th-grade students stepped back in time to experience living history at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire as part of their study of the European Renaissance. This period of great awakening and rediscovery of ancient knowledge is just one component of ancient history and culture studied by our 7th-graders.

Seventh grade is a year of awakening, exploration, and discovery💡 Students are rising into their selfhood and are beginning to develop a new relationship with the world around them. They are now ready to begin seeing things from multiple points of view and are excited to examine how different their perspective can be from each new vantage point.

Students strengthen their understanding of geometry, as they work with shapes, angles, lines, and proportions. The process deepens their grasp of spatial reasoning and the principles of parallel lines, converging lines, and vanishing points—all essential concepts in both art and math. By working with tools like compasses and rulers, they develop accuracy and measurement skills that support their learning in algebra and trigonometry.

Here, SWS’s 7th-graders practice their perspective drawing skills as their minds, their understanding of math, and their worlds grow and expand. 🌍✨

Our fifth-graders joined in the cherished tradition of teaching their first-grade friends how to knit. 🧶✨
Before passing on their knowledge, the fifth-graders practiced their teaching techniques with one another, refining their skills and building confidence. As they guided their younger peers through their handwork projects, they not only shared a beautiful craft but also grew in ways that extend beyond knitting. Through this experience, our fifth-graders had the opportunity to feel like leaders, deepening their understanding of handwork while learning invaluable lessons in patience, teamwork, and the joy of giving back.

Our Parent/Child class celebrated the magic of Michaelmas in a truly special way—baking dragon bread and donning their beautiful Capes of Courage! The children hand-dyed their silk capes using a vibrant, natural dye made from freshly picked marigolds, creating a moment full of color and creativity. 🌼

Ancient scholars understood geometry to be the act

Ancient scholars understood geometry to be the act of measuring the complete human experience of living on Earth. In Waldorf education, a similar holistic emphasis is placed on this area of study.

In 7th grade, students have entered their year of exploration, working to answer the question of “Who am I?” and discovering new perspectives. Waldorf’s approach to geometry is distinct from traditional lessons, as it places emphasis on feeling and the ways in which we may use geometry to understand the human body and the natural world. These lessons invite students to explore deeper into their inner and outer worlds.
